I’ve had the privilege of exploring Faial with her on multiple occasions, and each trip has been magical, memorable, and safely guided.Hiking Adventures in 2020Our 2020 hikes began with the breathtaking Caldeira, Faial’s volcanic crater at the island’s center. Guided by Zuga, we descended into its forest, surrounded by endemic plants and volcanic landscapes, an unforgettable walk inside a living natural wonder.We also trekked around Vulcão dos Capelinhos, exploring the lava fields. Diving Experiences: 2020 & 2025In both 2020 and again in 2025, Zuga was our trusted guide for all of our (many) dives. At the magnificent Princess Alice Bank, we entered the deep blue where mantas glide effortlessly and schools of barracudas and greater amberjack surround you. Seeing oceanic mantas was incredible, particularly in 2025, where with almost no current the (experienced) group was allowed to go into the blue. However, it was in 2020 we had the once-in-a-lifetime encounter with a whale shark—a giant shadow that suddenly appeared from the blue. Experiences like this stay with you forever, and Zuga’s calm, professional presence, whilst always have a focus on safety made it even more special.One of my favorite memories, though, was during a coastal dive inside the marine reserve. We came across one of the resident meros (groupers). To our surprise, it swam straight up to Zuga and leaned against her, as if asking for a gentle “back scratch.” It was hilarious, magical, and unforgettable. I first met Zuga on Príncipe Island, where she worked with me on a turtle-watching project. Her professionalism, generosity, and cheerful spirit were essential to the success of that trip.So when I decided to visit Faial, I contacted her right away. We went hiking together, and I was fascinated by her banana plantation. I learned the differences between male and female plants, how the banana “family” system works, and the timing of the harvest. Beyond the wonderful bananas Zuga sells (both ripe and green), I also tasted her handmade, healthy products: dried bananas, banana bread, and banana jam. I brought some dried bananas home, but I should have bought more — they’re already gone!Time spent with Zuga is always full of learning and joy. We visited the whalemuseum, went up to lakes and the stunning landscapes in higher regions, saw beautiful shorelines, covered in weird shapes of lava flow and had stops wherever we asked for. Don't forget your swimwear if you like to take a refreshing dip into one of the swimpots behind the shoreline. Usually lunch is included but we brought sandwiches to share.
